The Birds of the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery CenterBirds of Prey Tegan is a male great-horned owl who was blown out of his nest during a violent Nebraska thunderstorm in March of 1996. He was saved by a trucker who brought him to the Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Zoo staff attempted to introduce Tegan to another great-horned owl nest in the vicinity, but the owl parents rejected the new addition. Tegan has a slightly injured eye and has grown very accustom to people. Tegan was one of the first birds to come to the GWDC. His hooting behavior has been a popular aspect of the bird-of-prey programs. Great-horned owls are widespread across North America and are very adaptable. They will often use the abandoned nest of a raptor, crow or even a squirrel. Great-horned owls will eat just about anything that moves including rodents, rabbits, birds, amphibians, reptiles and even skunks. Tegan |
