The Birds of the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery CenterBirds of Prey Ulysses is a male golden eagle abandoned at a Utah nest site in 1981. He has lived in captivity all of his life helping eagle researchers trap wild eagles throughout the western United States. Ulysses came to the GWDC in 2005 and is a most impressive addition to the raptor presentations and outreach programs. Fairly common in the west, golden eagles inhabit mountainous or hilly terrain and hunt over open country for small mammals, snakes, birds and carrion. Golden eagles occasionally take pronghorn antelope fawns and mountain goat kids. Golden eagles have been protected since 1962 after over 20,000 were destroyed during a ten year span. Numbers are now stable and increasing. Ulysses |
