After years of dreaming and careful planning, the GWDC has moved forward with some exciting additions for our visitors to experience in the next year.

In the fall of 2007, construction started on the new River Valley Wolf Habitat, the new Naturalist Cabin/Wolf Den building, and much needed Parking Lot/Visitor Entrance improvements.

River Valley Wolf Habitat
The new wolf habitat will feature a broad river plain complete with a meandering stream with sandbars, islands and undercut banks. A complex streamside gallery forest of aspen, cottonwood, chokecherry and alder will provide shade and security to the resident pack of wolves. A sunken moat barrier will provide prime viewing opportunities of the social interactions of the pack.

Naturalist Cabin/Wolf Den
Upon entering the Naturalist Cabin, visitors will be greeted by the breathtaking views through floor to ceiling windows that will make them feel that they are truly part of the wolf exhibits. The panoramic views into the existing habitat to the north or the new River Valley to the south will help visitors make an intimate connection with the wolves as they explore their environment.

The addition of new wolf dens allows for the management of a second wolf pack. The wolf packs can be shifted from one exhibit area to the other, creating a varied and enriched environment for the wolves.

Parking Lot/Visitor Entrance
A new enlarged and centralized parking lot will greet visitors in the fall of 2007. In addition, a new walkway will allow visitors a clear and engaging path to the Center's entrance as they pass the popular fishing-grizzly statue. New or returning visitors will have a perfect view of the Center from South Canyon Street as they near our approach.


In this artistic rendition, you can see the layout of how the Naturalist Cabin is centrally located between the two wolf habitats. The River Valley Wolf Habitat (in the foreground) features the wandering stream and deciduous forest.




This cross-section of the Naturalist Cabin gives you an idea of the planned interior featuring a large fireplace and numerous wolf artifacts and graphics.


Visitors will experience the wolf packs from the Naturalist Cabin or from unobstructed views from the interpretive walkway.
